Riders get ready, competitive cycling returns to the 592 with three Time Trial events, the first of which rolls off on Sunday.
These and other details were confirmed by Racing Secretary of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), Malcolm Sonaram yesterday.
According to Sonaram, the races are geared towards adhering to the COVID-19 measures. Time Trial events set the perfect stage for the return of competitive racing in a safe environment.
Time trials are commonly referred to as the ‘race of truth’ as they require considerable mental concentration and toughness as well as the ability to tolerate intense physical discomfort.
However, cyclists compete individually and against only one competitor — the timing clock.
The first local cycling event in more than eight months is scheduled to be staged on Sunday from 07:00hrs. This will be followed by Time Trial events in Berbice on November 29 and Linden on December 6.
In order to avoid crowding during registration on the mornings of the events, the Federation is advising cyclists to pre-register. Additionally, cyclists will be allowed only one chaperone.
Sonaram told this newspaper that prior to the start of the races, temperature tests will be conducted on each cyclist.
Each cyclist will start at a two-minute increment to avoid grouping along the race course. The top three finishers in each event will be rewarded, while the overall accumulated time placings will be awarded one through six.
