The police are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of well-known doctor and lecturer Wesley Torrington, whose partially decomposed body was discovered in his Roxanne Burnham Gardens, South Georgetown home yesterday morning.
Stabroek News was informed that the lifeless body of Torrington was discovered in a chair in his living room around 11am.
Torrington, 60, of Marigold Street, Roxanne Burnham Gardens, lived alone. He was the Assistant Dean of the Lincoln American University (LAU).
The police said their initial investigations revealed that Torrington was last seen alive around 7.30pm on Monday by a neighbour, who he told he wasn’t feeling well.
A decision was taken to summon the police yesterday after the same neighbour ventured to check on him and got no response.
Stabroek News understands that Torrington did not join any of his online classes since Monday. As a result, his colleagues also showed up at his home yesterday as they suspected something was amiss.
Torrington’s body was examined and there were no visible marks of violence. There was also no signs of forced entry into his house, the police said.
As the news of Torrington’s death spread yesterday, many, including his students and patients, expressed condolences on Facebook.
“Dr. Wesley Torrington, one of the most brilliant doctors I’ve ever had the pleasure of being taught by. His dedication to the progression of medical education is almost unmatched; he was always looking for some way to restructure the way in which we were educated so that it would be better. He was also one of the few persons who believed in his students’ ability to overcome any struggle, and even provided avenues for us to do so,” one post stated.
“Shocked at the untimely demise of one of the most brilliant doctor, an icon of medical education, a dedicated lecturer and a friend to all his students. Your depth of knowledge and incredible passion will forever inspire me! Forever grateful for all the knowledge you’ve pass onto us,” another said.
Torrington’s body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy, which is scheduled to be conducted in the new week.
