West Indies Test vice-captain, Roston Chase has called on his side to produce a better batting performance as they prepare to face New Zealand.
In a recent interview, the vice-captain explained that the bowling has held its own but the batting has not been producing the kind of scores required.
“What I would like to see improve overall is the batting,” Chase said while adding, “I think our bowlers have been doing brilliantly for us but we’ve not been getting big enough scores for them to bowl at, mainly first innings I think that the first innings really sets up the game for the whole Test match.”
He added, “Once you put the team under pressure in the first innings with a good total I think they will always be chasing the game and I think it’s a good thing to have the opposition chasing the game in Test cricket that means you’ll always have chances in terms of winning the game so I think as a batting unit we need to at least give the bowlers something to work with.”
For Chase, it is expected to be even more a difficult task since he believed New Zealand is one of the tougher places to score runs.
“Batting is, I think the more difficult of the two seeing the experienced bowling attack that New Zealand has they make it tougher for touring teams to come down here and get those big scores that you see in other parts of the world…” Chase declared.
The 28-year-old said that he would also like to see an improvement in his batting and signaled his intention to score more centuries.
“Yes, I would love to convert more of my starts I’ve been getting,” he said.
“Being the vice-captain or not being the vice-captain, as I said in terms of the role, I just think it’s an opportunity for me to communicate with some of the other guys and try to make them feel as comfortable as possible and perform to the best of their abilities and just try to get the best out of each person.”
West Indies will play three T20Is towards the end of the month along with two Tests in December.
