Dear Editor,
There are a lot of grandiose schemes being announced by the government on an almost daily basis. From “mega” hotels, 4-lane highways and new bridges using oil money which, as far as I know, the government does not yet have. The citizens of Guyana need to be careful. Countries and companies seem to be queueing up to dip their hands into the coffers. Meanwhile, the existing road infrastructure is failing, road traffic accidents, some of which are fatal, occur every day and serious crime stalks the land blighting everyone’s life. The supply of electricity remains a scandal and the police force is understaffed and lacks competency. These are very major issues which first and foremost need to be addressed before the bags of money arrive on the doorsteps. The plight of Venezuela should be remembered, especially as world demand for oil has collapsed along with oil prices and the UK intends to ban the sale of new fossil fuel powered vehicles from 2030 .
I remain deeply fond of Guyana but it needs to be vigilant.
Yours faithfully,
Peter Hays
