A pedestrian yesterday succumbed to injuries sustained after being struck down by a motor lorry on the Agricola Public Road as he attempted to cross the four-lane thoroughfare.
The accident occurred at around 5.10 pm on Monday.
The deceased is still to be identified, police yesterday said while noting that the driver of the motor lorry, a 33-year-old of Soesdyke Public Road, East Bank Demerara has been held.
Investigations have revealed that the motor lorry was proceeding north along the western drive lane of the eastern carriage way of Agricola Public Road. At that time the third lane for north bound traffic was activated.
The driver told police that he observed a pedestrian standing on the median facing east on the centre of the two carriageways. The driver related that while he was about to pass the road head, the pedestrian without looking south, stepped onto the roadway and walked into the path of the motor lorry. Unable to halt the vehicle in time, the front centre portion of the lorry collided with the pedestrian who fell on to the roadway and the rear right side wheel ran over both legs, Police said.
He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Emergency Unit, where he was seen and examined by a doctor.
Police said the pedestrian died at around 7.30 am yesterday. While hospitalized, he was treated for head injuries, internal bleeding and broken feet.
