Chaos broke out at the Stabroek Market area last evening as the police attempted to arrest an individual and were allegedly attacked by bystanders.
The incident unfolded around 6pm.
Police Commander Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean, when contacted by Stabroek News last night said that preliminary reports are that the police attempted to make an arrest when they were attacked by bystanders who allegedly hurled objects in their direction.
This resulted in the force’s vehicle being damaged.
In an attempt to calm the situation, McBean said the police took actions.
A number of rounds were discharged. However, no injury was reported.
Several persons were taken into custody.
Among them is the individual who the police were initially pursuing. It is unclear what offence he was arrested for.
