Citing low traffic on the competitive Guyana to Barbados route, local airline Trans Guyana Airways (TGA) has reduced its five-time-a-week operations to once a week, according to Commercial Manager, Alexandra Correia.
Correia yesterday explained to this newspaper that with some countries still closed and a relatively low volume of passengers travelling despite this country’s borders being opened up, TGA was forced to reassess its operations on the route
The Managing Director of the airlines noted that the once-a-week flight schedule will commence from December 10 and flights will be on Thursdays only.
At the start of November, TGA, after offering months of chartered service between the two countries to marooned passengers following the closure of the borders as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, launched daily flights along the route.
“This is a part of our larger plans. We are looking to form connections to the rest of South America. We have operations in Lethem already so we are looking to connect travelers with the rest of South America. A lot of tourist are already coming to Barbados so we are starting here,” she had told Stabroek News.
With regional airline LIAT currently not operating on the route, it is open and has now become competitive, with both TGA and Caribbean Airlines operating. Caribbean Air-lines currently operates three weekly flights on the route.
