The majority of the persons who tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Orealla and Siparuta are asymptomatic, Toshao Carl Peneux revealed yesterday.
Peneux said that the councils of the two communities had constructed a facility to isolate persons but all those who have since tested positive for the virus were placed in home isolation. He added that a few of those persons had developed mild symptoms of COVID-19 but those persons have since recovered and been discharged.
According to the Peneux, the last report he received indicated that Siparuta had 62 cases of COVID-19 while Orealla has 33. He noted that they are still awaiting results for more persons. However, he said, not much testing is being done in the community as doctors are only swabbing persons who were in contact with positive cases. Only one death has been recorded in the community.
Following the confirmation of multiple COVID-19 cases, a lockdown was imposed on Orealla and its satellite village, Siparuta. The lockdown came into effect last Friday but according to the Toshao, persons are still refusing to adhere to the measures despite the village council distributing the necessary supplies to ensure that families will be able to sustain themselves during the lockdown.
The lockdown is scheduled to end on December 11th.
In addition, he noted they are allowing persons to go to their farms and fish so he is unclear as to why persons are refusing to adhere to lockdown measures.
Meanwhile, the Toshao expressed gratitude to the Civil Defence Commission which presented food supplies, cleaning agents and vitamins to every household in the two communities.
