Police Commander of Region Six, Jairam Ramlakhan last evening said that six persons have been detained for questioning following a major robbery on Sunday evening at the home of Marcus Brian Bisram.
Four bandits robbed the former murder accused of $5M and expensive jewellery at his Number 70 Village, Corentyne house.
Bisram, 31, explained that he and a group of his relatives were sitting outside of his house in the yard when four masked men entered. He recalled that three of the bandits had firearms while the fourth carried a machete.
“They just came in and say ‘don’t move’ and they relieve everyone of their cellphones first and then they directed us to go into the house, all of us and then they relieved everyone there of their jewellery”, he noted.
He said one of the bandits then asked which was Bisram’s room, “I show him and he took me to my room and he asked me for all the jewellery and money which I gave to him because he had the gun on the 2-year-old kid (relative) following me around”.
According to Bisram, while two of the bandits followed him around the other remained guarding his relatives. After one of his cousins, 24, began resisting he was dealt several lashes with the cutlass.
Bisram said that the bandits escaped with $5M in cash, two bangles of 100 pennyweight gold each, a gold chain of 100 pennyweight gold, one diamond ring worth US$12,000, one IPhone 12 and a wallet with US$2000 and about seven credit cards.
In addition, the bandits also escaped with seven cellular phones and jewellery which they took from his relatives.
As it relates to the large amount of cash, he said, “I had it for a reason… it was attorney fees I had to pay”.
He said that around six days before the robbery he gathered the money to pay his attorney. He then noted that “no one” knew he had brought such a large sum of cash home.
Bisram said that his neighbours later informed him that the bandits escaped on motorcycles which they reportedly parked several houses away from Bisram’s.
He added that he has not had personal security in over three months and had not noticed if anyone was trailing him at any time, “It’s just we are always locked, and we are always inside, so it’s unexpected because they were like twenty of us here”.
