Firing of Dr Adams suggests dark motives, gov’t must explain

Dear Editor,

I call on the government to issue a comprehensive statement explaining the reasons for the dismissal of the EPA chief Vincent Adams. I have read Dr Adams’ record of service with the US govt. – there can hardly be another Guyanese with his expertise and directly relevant Oil & Gas experience. His summary firing suggests dark motives. The Guyanese people and their representatives in parliament must demand explanations from their government.

Read a U.S. government departmental newsletter on Dr Adams here: https://www.energy.gov/management/articles/dr-vincent-adams-retiring-after-30-year-doe-career.

I also call on the government to issue a statement to explain the reasons for failing to invite Dr Jan Mangal to ascertain his expertise in the oil business with a view to retaining him to help run Guyana’s emerging oil industry.

I also call on the government to explain its reasons for shunting their own party member, Attorney Charles Ramson Jr to the Sports Ministry, when he is the only man in the party who has some knowledge of the Oil and Gas industry. (Charles Ramson had taken a year off to go back to College in the UK to read for an Oil & Gas specialty degree – to prepare himself for Guyana’s new oil industry). This speaks to the dark and mysterious ways this government is working, deliberately not placing the best qualified persons in job slots where they are most needed and where the nation can most benefit from their particular expertise and education. What prejudices can this government harbour against its own party member?

The above three points suggest something dark, mysterious about the way the Irfaan Ali Administration is operating with regard to the oil industry. Does the government intend to have a cozy relationship with the Oil Companies – and that Vincent Adams, Jan Mangal, Charles Ramson – all of them would have insisted on transparency at all levels of the industry?

Yours faithfully,

Mike Persaud
