President of the GOA, K Juman-Yassin, (third from left) poses with representatives of some of the GOA’s affiliates following the disbursements of  thermometers, sanitizers and cheques worth $50,000 each yesterday.

Thermometers, sanitizers and cheques worth $50,000 each were distributed by the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) to some of its affiliates at its Liliendaal headquarters yesterday.

According to president of the GOA, K Juman Yassin, the handouts should aid with the safe recommencement of sports.

Said Juman-Yassin “The GOA is cognizant of the fact that sports has returned and we wanted to be able to help it to commence in a safe manner.”

So far locally, cycling, track and field and cricket have all made successful returns to competition.

Although he was happy with the return of sports, Juman Yassin chided most of the associations for being unresponsive to communiques sent out by the GOA.

Of the 20 plus affiliates, only representatives of six of the bodies, (bodybuilding, boxing, cycling, track and field, volleyball and weightlifting) were present yesterday.

President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle and Vice President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Amanda Hermonstine gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the associations present both underscoring its need and timeliness.

Gyms have reopened and the GBA’s elite boxers will soon recommence training while the AAG is set to stage its leg of the annual South American 10k on Sunday at West Demerara.
