Although travel between Suriname and Guyana is expected to resume on December 12th, the two governments are still in discussions on health protocols.
The government through the recently released Emergency Health Measures that are expected to be in effect until December 31st, revealed that travel between Suriname and Guyana through the Moleson Creek port.
During yesterday’s COVID-19 update, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony stated that the ministry has been working with the Surinamese authorities to ensure that there can be a synchronisation of the guidelines and protocols for reopening the Moleson Creek port.
He explained that the protocols in the two countries are slightly different, while adding that Guyana requires a negative PCR test result within 72 hours for persons entering to be allowed to go without quarantine. “If that PCR is beyond 72 hours but within 7 days then you will have to do a second PCR test upon arrival in Guyana,” he said.
However, while Suriname requires the negative PCR test result to enter the country, persons are also required to quarantine for 14 days. “So people traveling over to Suriname would have to go into quarantine. So we are trying to synchronize and we are currently wrapping up those discussions,” Anthony noted.
He mentioned that once those discussions are wrapped, it would then pave the way for the reopening of the border at Moleson Creek. Further, he noted that previously he had a meeting with Surname’s Minister of Health and later meetings between the two countries’ technical personnel have been held to develop agreements in relation to health between the countries.
