The South American 10K Classic Road Race initially scheduled for tomorrow at West Demerara has been postponed to next Sunday.
The Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) is currently working with the COVID- 19 Task Force to ensure that competitions conducted by the association will be done with strict regulations which will aid in the prevention of the spread of the coronavirus.
Hence, the AAG and the task force will be utilizing the extra week to ensure all necessary health protocols are in place.
“We remain committed to protecting the health and safety of our athletes and officials” was part of a statement released by AAG yesterday.
The AAG recently staged successful Cross Country events in Linden and Berbice after it was given the green light by the task force.
When the 18th edition of the 10K event does run off, AAG’s President Aubrey Hutson expects keen competition among the elite runners on the West Side.
The event which traditionally starts on the streets of the city and finishes in the National Park, will commence at Mary on the West Coast of Demerara from 14:00hrs and conclude at the finish line of the National Track and Field Centre.
Jonathan Fagundes, Ronell Newton, Jonathan Fordyce, Cleveland Forde, Winston Missigher and Cleveland Thomas will be the front runners vying for spots on the podium.
The first five open male and female finishers will each take home $150, 000, $125, 000, $100 000, $75, 000 and $50, 000 in that order.
