The six 1.6 Megawatt (MW) Caterpillar units purchased by Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) to boost generating capacity for the holiday season have arrived.
According to a GPL press release issued yesterday, “The arrival of these units is in keeping with our Company’s commitment to boost generation capacity and provide customers in the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) with reliable electricity.”
The six power modules and associated transformers were procured at a cost of $475,422,029 and $80,886,430 respectively.
The release also stated that three of the units will be installed at GPL’s Sophia, Georgetown location, while the other three will be installed at GPL’s Onverwagt (West Berbice) location.
An additional four units, with total capacity of 6.4MW, have been placed on standby by the supplier in the event there is a failure of any of the six units purchased by GPL. Three of these reserved units will be placed at GPL’s Canefield (East Berbice) location and one at GPL’s Anna Regina (Essequibo Coast) location.
GPL assures that it will “spare no effort” in ensuring that all its customers have access to reliable service of the highest quality, the release added.
