The police were yesterday yet to apprehend the suspects in the fatal shooting of contractor Peter Gonsalves, who was attacked in front of a Newtown, Kitty bar on Monday night.

Police Commander of Region 4(a) Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean yesterday told Stabroek News that investigations are still ongoing.

A friend of the dead man, when contacted, stated that the now deceased and a worker who was staying at Gonsalves’ Pere Street, Kitty home left his Queenstown premises around 5.30 pm after completing their work there.

The friend said it was unlike Gonsalves to leave his home after settling in and so he suspected that they must have stopped to get something for Gonsalves’ worker.

The friend added that Gonsalves had been working for him for four years “on and off” and described him as a talented and friendly individual and contractor.

Gonsalves was a father of three.

When Stabroek News contacted a relative of the deceased, he was unwilling to speak as he stated that investigations were ongoing and he preferred that they run their course.

A police report stated that Gonsalves was gunned down on Garnett Street, Newtown, Kitty at about 9.45 pm, when he was attacked by two men on a motorcycle.

The report said Gonsalves was attacked by two men while proceeding west along Garnett Street on his motorcycle, a black and white XR motorcycle, bearing registration number CJ 600 and valued at $450,000.

One of the suspects, who was armed with a handgun, shot Gonsalves several times causing him to fall to the ground.

The police report further stated that the pillion rider took the deceased’s motorcycle and made good his escape.

Gonsalves was shot about three times about his body, while his worker escaped unhurt.

At the time of the shooting, the two victims were reportedly on their way to purchase cigarettes.

However, as they stopped in front of the Red Bar on Garnett Street, the two bandits on the motorcycle pulled up alongside them and launched their attack.

Gonsalves was pronounced dead at the scene by EMT services.
