A Chester Village resident who was struck down by a minibus on the Chester Public Road, West Coast Berbice on Monday, yesterday succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

Maxwell Mona, a 56-year-old labourer was unconscious after he was struck.

Police investigations revealed that the minibus was proceeding west on the southern lane of the road. The 34-year-old driver of the minibus alleged that the pedestrian suddenly ran from the southern side to the northern side and into the path of his vehicle.

The report stated that the driver braked to avoid a collision but his efforts failed as the left front of the vehicle hit Mona causing him to fall onto the roadway.

He was picked up in an unconscious state by the minibus driver who rushed him to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where he was seen by a doctor and transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital in a critical condition and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. He was later transferred to the GPH for further treatment.

The statement added that a breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the vehicle and no trace of alcohol was found.

A relative of the deceased, Eusi Mona, during an interview with Stabroek News stated that Maxwell was hit from behind. The man said, after arriving at the scene some two minutes later, he told the driver to take the deceased to the hospital in the hope of saving him. Eusi noted that while at the Fort Wellington Hospital he told the driver of the minibus that he should head over to the Fort Wellington Police Station and report the accident.

The relative of the deceased explained that as a result of the accident Maxwell suffered injuries to his head, hand, foot, and chest. The man stated that even though he was told by doctors that Maxwell’s injuries were severe, he was still optimistic that he would eventually recover. However, after being admitted to the GPH, Maxwell succumbed to his injuries.
