Dear Editor,
Guyana currently produces sugar at nearly 34 cents per lb when the world market price is nearly 15 cents per lb.
While I agree that in the short term a sugar subsidy is necessary to keep thousands of Guyanese workers off the breadline more clarity is needed on what we are trying to achieve and how we are going to achieve it.
GuySuCo CEO Sase Singh did mention that we can get 60 cents per lb for packaged sachet sugar. Clearly, this is certainly a market that Guyana can tap into.
The PNCR-led APNU+AFC sacked thousands of sugar workers when its own COI into the sugar industry said investment then privatisation.
Without clarification as to where we are incurring high production costs in the industry it is difficult to judge if the medium and long term future of the sugar industry is viable.
Yours faithfully,
Sean Ori
