A thrilling finale of the three-leg Time Trial event is on the cards today as competitive cycling returns to Berbice.
The race is a virtual three-man one among Marlon Williams, Jamual John and Brighton John, the top three wheelsmen so far.
The virtual podium dwellers Williams (first leg winner/third in the second leg), Jamual John (two second place finishes) and Brighton John (third and first) along with the other cyclists will battle for the overall spoils when the event gets underway from 09:00hrs.
Racing against the clock will start in front of Benjamin Sport and Fitness Centre at Fyrish, proceed along the Number 19 road and end at the GUYOIL Gas Station at Palmyra.
Each cyclist will start at a two-minute increment to avoid grouping along the race course. The top three finishers in each event will be rewarded, while the overall accumulated time placings will be awarded one through six.
The race is geared towards adhering to the COVID-19 measures. Time Trial events provided the perfect stage for the return of competitive racing in a safe environment. Prior to the start, temperature tests will be conducted on each cyclist.
Time trials are commonly referred to as the ‘race of truth’ as they require considerable mental concentration and toughness as well as the ability to tolerate intense physical discomfort.
However, cyclists compete individually and against only one competitor — the timing clock.
Who will take the overall spoils is anyone’s guess but I am sure Brighton John will be aiming for back-to-back victories following his win in Linden last Sunday. Jamual John, meanwhile, will be hoping that the roads of the Ancient County provide him with the elusive victory while Williams will be out to prove his first leg win in the city was no fluke. A thrilling finale is definitely on the cards.
