Kacey Heyliger, one of the suspects in the fatal shooting of contractor Peter Gonsalves, was yesterday charged with murder and remanded to prison.
Heyliger, a 28-year-old taxi driver of 42 Shell Road, Kitty, was charged with committing the murder in the course or furtherance of a robbery.
The charge against him states that on December 7th, at Garnett Street, Kitty, he murdered Gonsalves, 60, of Pere Street, Kitty, in the course or furtherance of a robbery.
Heyliger, represented by attorney Dexter Todd, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan adjourned the proceedings until January 11th, 2021.
Gonsalves was shot and killed around 9.45pm last week Monday when he was attacked by two men on a motorcycle. The police said that the attack occurred in front of the Red Bar at Garnett Street, Newtown, Kitty. He was attacked by two men while proceeding west along Garnett Street on his motorcycle, a black and white XR motorcycle, bearing registration number CJ 600 and valued at $450,000.
One of the suspects, who was armed with a handgun, shot Gonsalves several times, causing him to fall to the ground before the bandit escaped on his motorcycle, the police said.
At the time of the shooting, Gonsalves and his employee were reportedly on their way to purchase cigarettes. However, as they stopped in front of the bar, the two bandits on the motorcycle pulled up alongside them and launched the attack. Gonsalves was pronounced dead at the scene by EMT services.
