A crafty half-century from national Under – 15 batsman, Alvin Mohabir, was the cornerstone of Georgetown’s 99-run win over West Demerara in the opening round of the Demerara Inter-Association Under – 19 50-overs tournament yesterday.
The match was contested at the Everest Cricket Club ground under damp conditions. Georgetown’s skipper, Dwain Dick, won the toss and decided to bat.
His team endured a less than ideal start after opening batsman, Ezekiel Wilson (00) was removed by seamer, Jeffery Blair, in the first over. His dismissal brought Mohabir to crease and, together with Jaden Campbell (19), the pair added 60 useful runs.
During that time, Mohabir – a left-hander by trade – bided his time and built a solid innings. He ended unbeaten on 72 in a knock decorated with three fours and two sixes to propel his side to 167 for six in 35 overs. He also shared a crucial fifth-wicket 61-run stand with Dick (36), who swatted a few sixes to up the ante in the end.
Nityanand Mathura, was the pick of the bowlers for the West Demerara side with figures of 3-24 while Blair nabbed 2-40. Off-spinner, Vishal Persaud, who operated with the new ball, was measly, going for 15 from his seven overs.
Meanwhile, the West Demerara side in response, folded meekly for 68 inside 25 overs. Only Persaud (14) and Andrew Seepersaud (15) recorded double figures as Marlon Boele (3-9), Marvin Permaul (2-1), and Bryion Bowen (2-24) combined to skittle their counterparts.
The tournament continues tomorrow.
