Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson (Jr.) has urged the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) to “produce more champions” as he committed to providing more support to aid the development of the sport.
During a meeting with executive members of the federation on November 30, at the Guyana National Gymnasium to discuss the way forward for the development and revival of volleyball in Guyana, Minister Ramson highlighted several issues faced by the federation and gave guidance on how to take volleyball to the next level.
“He was very participative in the sport during his school days,” a press release from the federation noted, following the meeting. According to the release, for several years, much support was not given for volleyball development.
However, Minister Ramson assured that this will change under his administration.
“With Guyana being the defending champions for the U-21 males Inter Guiana Games, Guyana is showing promising potential to up their game in the volleyball arena.
“We need to produce more Champions,” said the minister, following up on his statement to give support and provide facilities and training opportunities for each club.
“Cubs are expected to maximise the use and availability of the National Gymnasium with the training times that will be allotted to them,” the minister stated. “Coaches need to focus on the next generation of potential volleyball athletes because they will be the nursery who will take up the sport when the senior players are gone,” Ramson Jnr., stated adding: “More participation and popularity of the sport is also needed.”
Volleyball is set to make a return following the approval of the COVID-19 guidelines. The GVF has prepared a full schedule to facilitate several activities and competitions in accordance with the safety guidelines of COVID-19. Attendees at the meeting from the Guyana Volleyball Federation were Levi Nedd (President), Rodney Fredericks (Vice President), Kim Chan-Bagot (General Secretary) and Yannick Chase (Technical Advisor).
