Rooplall Abrahim of West Coast Berbice was yesterday sentenced to 17 years in prison for the murder of an inmate, Neshan Jagmohan, while he was on remand on two murder charges.
Jagmohan, a cane harvester of Hampshire Squatting Area, and his older brother, Ramnarine Jagmohan, a farmer, of Belvedere Squatting Area, had both been remanded on a murder charge over the killing of the Hampshire Squatting Area, Corentyne businessman Devindra Deodat, 34, called ‘Dave,’ in October of 2013.
Having attended court on June 21, 2017, they returned to their cells at the New Amsterdam prison where they were attacked by inmates with improvised weapons.
The men were rushed to the hospital where Neshan was pronounced dead on arrival, while his brother was hospitalized for some time.
A post-mortem examination which was done on Neshan Jagmohan revealed that he died from puncture wounds to the heart, lungs and kidneys.
Abrahim yesterday appeared at the High Court in Berbice before Justice Brassington Reynolds for sentencing after he had pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.
Prosecutor, Abigail Gibbs, told the court that Abrahim disregarded the sacred home of his previous murder victims which he entered unlawfully as well as the prison system.
Gibbs said, “The state is also again seeking to highlight to this court the accused’s position in the probation report that he has no knowledge of this offence even though the offence would have occurred in the prison system to which he admitted in his caution statement and subsequently handed over the murder weapon to the prison officer”.
Justice Reynolds during sentencing told the accused that in his years of being on the bench he has never faced off with somebody like him.
The judge then sentenced the convict to 17 years in prison, and told him that he prays there is a programme at the prison that can help him.
“Go with God, my prayers are with and for you, you are in place where you can get help and I recommend that you take it”, the judge told the accused.
