New Amsterdam Mayor, Winifred Heywood, has thrown her support behind Flying Ace’s premier wheelsman, Balram Narine.
Narine picked up where he left off when local cycling action returned recently after a nine-month hiatus with the Guyana Cycling Federation’s three-stage time trials. In that event, Narine rode to a fifth place overall finish in the Open division. He placed seventh in the Georgetown leg followed by two eighth placed finishes in the Linden and Berbice legs. His overall timing stood at one hour, 10 minutes and 12 seconds.
For his performance, Mayor Heywood recognized the 22-year-old through a simple ceremony at her New Amsterdam office where he received a financial reward as well as a trophy.
The former Headmistress congratulated the Skeldon native and encouraged him to train harder as his career takes off.
Narine, who is based in New Amsterdam, in return thanked the Mayor for her gesture and informed her that he felt his performance did not reflect his abilities since he was suffering from a brief illness which hampered his preparation.
Nevertheless, the Flying Ace captain pledged to make the Mayor proud and surpass expectations.
The wheelsman also extended gratitude to his coach, Randolph Roberts who he labeled as an instrumental figure since his cycling career begun and who has been by his side throughout the ups and downs.
Narine has been a prominent competitor in the Mayor’s Cup, sponsored by Mayor Heywood over the last four years and has rode away with glory on two occasions.
Narine explained that he plans to continue training harder as he sets his goals for the new year which includes competing internationally.
