A 27-year-old pedestrian succumbed at a city hospital early yesterday morning, hours after he was allegedly struck down by a Ministry of Housing and Water pick-up truck along the Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) public road.
The dead man has been identified as Vijai Doodnauth, who was reportedly a resident of Diamond Squatting Area.
The accident occurred around 6.45 pm on Friday and Doodnauth suffered injuries about his body, including head injuries.
He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he succumbed around 2.22 am yesterday.
Guyana Police Force (GPF) spokesman Assistant Commissioner Royston Andries-Junor confirmed that the driver of the pick-up, a 42-year-old of Lodge Housing Scheme, Georgetown resident, was taken into police custody.
According to a GPF statement, the driver claimed that he was proceeding north along the the eastern lane of the western carriageway of the public road in the pick-up when, while in the vicinity of Courts, Doodnauth, who was standing on the concrete median, allegedly ran into the path of the vehicle.
The driver was subject to a breathalyser test but no trace of alcohol was found in his breath.
