An employee of the Aurora Gold Mines, a subsidiary of Zijin Mining Group has been hospitalized after a forklift toppled while he was offloading a truck yesterday.
Director of Corporate Office, Compliance, and Government Relations, Peter Benny, last night told Stabroek News that the worker sustained injuries to his feet and is currently receiving medical attention at a private city hospital.
He noted that at the time of the accident, the worker was offloading a truck behind the kitchen at the Region Seven mine. It was while doing so, the forklift toppled and pinned him resulting in injuries to his feet. The employee was rushed to company’s medical centre and received medical attention however, out of caution, Benny said the company had the employee taken by medivac for further treatment. He noted that this is the first accident the company has recorded in months and depending on the outcome of the medical examination it will determine if there was lost time for the company.
According to Benny, while accidents like these occur, they encourage and promote safe Occupational, Health and Safety practices on site.
The Occupational Safety and Health Department of the Ministry of Labour, and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission will also be informed of the accident, he said.
