Journalist Michael Benjamin assaulted  and robbed

A journalist of La Parfait Harmonie was on Saturday night assaulted and robbed by two men who he was involved in an accident with.

According to a police report, the journalist, fifty-four-year-old Michael Benjamin of Lot 502 La Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara was on his way home at about 10.30 pm  when the accident occurred.

Enquiries revealed that Benjamin was driving his motor car PMM 2732 along the Canal Number One Public Road heading west when he turned on to the First Avenue Dairy Old Bridge accidentally hitting a motorcycle and causing the rider and the pillion rider to fall to the ground.

Upon exiting his vehicle to check on the men, Benjamin recognized the two men and told them he didn’t want an issue and was therefore willing to compensate them. The suspects it was said, demanded $40,000 for damage to their motorcycle. The driver of the car then told the men he hadn’t the money on him but would go home and return with the money.

However, when Benjamin returned, he only had with him $30,000 and told the suspects he’d give them the remaining sum at a later date. The suspects who were infuriated by this dealt the victim several punches and kicks about his body causing him to fall to the ground. The two men then went into Benjamin’s  pants pocket and took his iPhone along with the $30,000 before escaping.

Police investigations are continuing.
