LONDON, CMC – Grenada centre back Aaron Pierre fired resurgent English League One club Shrewsbury Town to a 1-0 win at promotion-chasing Doncaster Rovers last night.
UK-born Pierre, 27, broke the deadlock with a second-half header for their third successive victory since Steve Cotterill took over as manager last month to climb out of the relegation zone.
It was Shrewsbury’s third 1-0 away victory against top top teams, having won at Lincoln City and Hull City earlier this month.
Fourth-placed Doncaster, who missed the chance to take top spot in the division, dominated the first half but failed to make their pressure pay.
Cotterill changed his side’s shape at the break and it paid off as the visitors took the lead on 53 minutes when Pierre delivered an early Christmas present for his Shropshire team by heading in a Shaun Whalley free-kick.
Rovers pushed hard for a way back into the game with Tyreece John-Jules, whose paternal grandparents are from Dominica and is on loan from Premier League club Arsenal, drawing a stunning save from Matija Sarkic in the best of their chances for an equaliser.
Shrewsbury, who move up to 16th in the table, two points clear of the bottom four, are away to bottom-but-one Wigan Athletic on Boxing Day.
Pierre was called up by Grenada five years ago and currently has 10 caps for the tiny Caribbean island.
