When the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) hosts the Under-19 tournament next year, Alvin Mohabir is expected to be a shoo-in for Demerara.
Despite many athletes facing challenges due to the impact of Covid-19, Mohabir did not miss a step. In fact, he looked a better player when he turned out for Georgetown in the Demerara Under-19 Inter-Association tournament recently.
After a near nine-month hiatus, the left-handed batsman steered the city side to victory in the first match with an unbeaten 72 while in the second match, he showed his value as a potent off-spinner with a five-wicket haul. Mohabir seemed set to cap an impressive tournament but was stopped in his tracks by the rain which foiled the final.
The 15-year-old sat down with Stabroek Sport as rain swept across the coast for nearly five hours but did not dampen his spirit.
The Transport Sports Club all-rounder explained that he was enthusiastic to return to on-field cricket having spent most of the time the country was on curfew in his yard playing with his family.
“Due to the Covid-19, I am training in my yard every day and keeping fit, so playing in the tournament was a good start for me despite being away from the game so long.
“The competition was really good, even though the rain was a part of the tournament,” he added.
It was this discipline that proved to be the difference for the former Guyana Under-15 all-rounder who shares the vision of one day representing the West Indies at Test cricket.
According to Mohabir, though being one of the younger players in the side, he loves the challenge having been a mainstay for his club in the first and second-division tournaments in the city.
Since his career began as an eight-year-old, Mohabir has been in an upward spiral and has not looked back especially with his mentor, Shaun Massiah, guiding him every step of the way.
Representing Guyana, Mohabir’s best performance came against Barbados Under-15 where he bagged three wickets and made 35 runs.
Notably, in his debut second-division match, the minuscule and soft-spoken lad grabbed a remarkable 9-58 against University of Guyana.
Mohabir had also seemed to be set to make the Guyana Under-17 after a successful Inter-County tournament prior to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak.
In that tournament, Mohabir was one of the leading wicket takers, returning seven wickets including a best of five for 19 against Berbice.
