The police last evening recaptured a prisoner following his brief escape from the Lusignan Prison during the wee hours of yesterday morning.
The prisoner who has been identified as 25-year-old Ishaka John, a former block maker of Lot 109 ‘A’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, was said to have escaped the Lusignan Prison Holding Bay sometime between 2am and 2.20am yesterday. John was spotted last night at 8.15pm at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. He was immediately arrested by ranks on a mobile police patrol.
Early yesterday morning, John was seen by three ranks of the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Prison Service attempting to escape. Several shots were reportedly fired in an effort to apprehend him but he continued running in an easterly direction between towers four, five and six.
On October 21 last year, John was charged with the murder of Jason Bowen whom he allegedly strangled during a suspected robbery. The incident had occurred in front of the Office of the then Leader of the Opposition on Church Street, Georgetown.
A security guard who was on duty at the office that night and had witnessed the incident, said that the suspect and Bowen were seen scuffling when the suspect wrapped a belt around the victim’s neck and strangled him. The suspect was afterwards apprehended by public-spirited citizens and handed over to the police.
A month after John was sent to prison, on November 15, 2019, he was involved in a fight where he was stabbed in his abdomen.
Following his recapture last night, John was medically examined but no injuries were found. He was subsequently handed over to prison authorities.
An investigation has also been launched into the circumstances surrounding his escape.
