At 35, Elton Dharry (24-6-1, 14KOs) has managed to carve out an impressive legacy in his boxing career.
However, following a failed bid to capture the World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight title last November and an inactive 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is ‘The Guyanese Gladiator’ considering hanging up the gloves?
Far from it.
The Brooklyn, USA-based fighter is re-energized after a year away from the ring and his mind and body is ready to take on all challenges in 2021.
Said Dharry yesterday “2020 has not been the best year for me as a fighter, but I am not going to complain because I used this year to let myself heal. I had quite a few injuries that I wasn’t healed up from properly. But now I am fully healed up and I am back to training.”
Dharry has been training at the Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn and the Blue Line Gym in New Jersey and has armed himself with a new addition to his camp, Coach Scott Burrell.
“Training is going good but it can be better. I’ve been training in Gleason’s but certain things are still not allowed like sparring due to COVID-19 measures. So I have to go to New Jersey at the Blue Line Boxing Gym to spar.”
Dharry stated that Burrell is a former fighter with an intelligent mind who brings a positive attitude and good energy to every training session. He envisions a great working relationship with Burrell who hails from the United Kingdom.
‘The Guyanese Gladiator’ then disclosed that he has a fight date for sometime in February but is still awaiting confirmation and the contract. In a year full of uncertainty however, capturing the elusive world title remains a constant for the orthodox fighter.
“I will be ready for 2021 and will be ready to take on all challenges. Hopefully we get a shot at the world title again in 2021, that is the plan” Dharry concluded.
