Competitive football returns today after a nine-month absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Kashif and Shanghai organized ‘Bounce back’ tournament kicks off from 17:00hrs at the National Stadium with Linden All Stars tackling the East Coast All Stars in the curtain raiser of a double header.
Two hours later, the GT All Stars will take on the Westside All Stars in the headliner of the first football tournament staged here amid the pandemic.
The two-day, four-team competition is a collaborative effort involving the Guyana Football Federation, the Kashif and Shanghai (K&S) Organization along with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
It will be held without spectators and conclude on January 1, 2021.
According to information received, all players were tested for COVID-19 prior to the start of the tournament which will be played in ‘bubble’ environment.
For most of 2020, football fans were deprived of the entertainment that had been a fixture in their lives.
Local supporters had been yearning for the sport to return at some point, as it could provide a sense of normalcy to their lives in such strange times.
Now, their prayers are being answered.
The final will be contested on New Year’s Day and will be broadcast live on NCN, E-Networks and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Facebook page.
Meanwhile, yesterday, Ground Structures Engineering Consultants (GSEC) became the latest sponsor of the event. The company’s Managing Director, Charles Ceres, presented a sponsorship cheque to Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major, one of the principals of the Kashif and Shanghai (K&S) Organization.
