West Indies white ball player, Romario Shepherd, who recently returned from a successful tour of New Zealand, has demonstrated his commitment to the development of the sport by sponsoring a grassroots tournament in Berbice.
“West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd came on board to support the Berbice Cricket Board by sponsoring an Under-13 cricket tournament for clubs in the Ancient County,” a release from the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) stated.
According to the release, President of the BCB, Hilbert Foster, sought the promising all-rounder’s support and he readily agreed to assist.
“President Foster expressed gratitude to Mr. Shepherd for remembering his Berbice roots and also for investing in the future. He assured the sponsor that the tournament would be well-organised and would achieve all of its objectives,” the BCB stated in the release.
Shepherd handed over the sponsorship to former Berbice, Guyana and West Indies opener, Clayton Lambert. Shepherd, a 26-year-old Guyanese, replaced Dwayne Bravo for the T20 leg of the recent New Zealand tour.
He produced a number of robust returns for the West Indies `A’ side against their New Zealand counterparts, cracking his maiden first-class ton, 133 and an unbeaten 77 during the two matches.
In bowling, he captured two wickets from three matches.
