President Irfaan Ali today announced that all public servants will receive $25,000 in a COVID-19 stimulus which is aside from the $25,000 per household cash grant.
“Fellow Guyanese, I am pleased to announce a one-off grant of $25,000 to workers of the entire public sector, which includes Central Government, statutory bodies, subvention agencies, public corporations, government pensioners and staff of the University of Guyana, to assist these workers to cope with the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic,” the President said today via a video message shared by his office.
He informed that “This initiative will also extend to workers of GuySuCo…those sugar workers who are unconscionably deprived of their livelihood by the APNU+AFC government will be in the new year be provided with transitional support as we continue to restructure the industry, in keeping with the PPP/C’s promise”.
According to Ali, the total cost of the grants is in excess of $2B and will directly benefit over 60,000 workers and their families.
The President did not say when the monies will be paid and given that December salaries and pensions have already been paid, it is unclear if it will be reflected in the beneficiaries’ January salaries or if it will be distributed in cash.
