The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has recorded a 6.8% decrease in serious crimes for the year 2020.
This disclosure was made by Commissioner of Police (ag) Nigel Hoppie, in his New Year’s message.
According to Hoppie, the figure was recorded although the force was confronted with challenges.
Meanwhile, in an effort to continue to build public trust and confidence, Hoppie said the GPF should be seen engaged in communities
“The year 2021 must see greater involvement in community work, community outreach and community involvement with emphasis on moulding youths, notwithstanding the COVID-19 pandemic. We must be seen as playing an influential role in the communities,” he said.
In 2019, the police also recorded a decline in serious crimes.
As of the end of October, 2019, the then Crime Chief (ag) Michael Kingston had said although there was a 35% increase in murders, the GPF had recorded an overall 2.5% decrease in serious crimes.
