National player, Davion Mars, capped 2020 by winning the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) National Blitz Chess Championships on Old Year’s Day at the Guyana National Stadium Providence on the East Bank of Demerara.
It was Mars’ second triumph of the week after he claimed top honours in the National Rapid Play championships earlier.
His Old Year’s Day showing,
saw him ending with nine points after he won 10 of 11 games.
His lone defeat came against Gilbert Williams in the seventh round.
In second place was Keron Sandiford, who was also crowned the 2020 National Junior Blitz Champion, after Jaden Taylor, opted out of defending his title.
Sandiford won 10 of his 11 games with his only loss coming to the champion, Mars in round two. Veteran player, Rai Sharma, took bronze after ending with eight wins and three losses.
Junior Rapid Play champion, Joshua Gopaul, ended fourth in the senior category and second in the junior category to conclude his junior career. The federation’s Director of Tournaments, Rashad Hussain, in commenting on the event, said: “It was the first FIDE-rated Blitz Chess tournament in the history of Guyana and I’m pleased to have ended 2020 on that note, with new champions being crowned.
“I would like to thank the GCF executives and players for supporting chess tournaments in 2020. It’s time to look forward to 2021, which, if things go according to plan, will be a more productive year.”
