National all-rounder, Kevin Sinclair, is the latest player to throw his hat in the ring and sponsor a cricket tournament in Berbice.
According to the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), “Today [Saturday], another national cricketer came on board to support the Berbice Cricket Board after having a discussion with our President Hilbert Foster.”
Sinclair, who plays for Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, told Stabroek Sport it was an honor to give back to his county and do his part in aiding the development of young talents throughout Berbice.
“Basically why I did it was because there wasn’t much tournaments last year and this year is a different year and I did it to help cricket at the junior level play in Berbice,” he said.
“Myself coming through these ranks I see the importance of having as much playtime as possible and it is an honor for me to be able to give back,” he added.
The 21-year-old said that through this gesture he is hopeful that some of the talents in the county would be spotted and eventually move on to the county side before making their way on to the national and West Indies teams.
The BCB indicated that it is likely the tournament will be for the under-17s and will start later in the year with Sinclair’s club assisting with trophies for the outstanding performers and winners. Sinclair, who was named the Guyana Cricket Board’s junior Cricketer-of-the-Year in 2018, joins the likes of Shimron Hetmyer and Romario Shepherd, who are among active players from the county to sponsor tournaments.
Sinclair has represented Guyana at the Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 levels before breaking into the Cricket Guy Inc. academy. He made his List A debut in 2019 during Cricket West Indies’ Super50 where he turned out for eventual champions, West Indies Emerging Players and ended as the tournament’s most economical bowler.
Last January, Sinclair made his first-class debut for the Guyana Jaguars and in August, played his first match of the Caribbean Premier League for the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
