A Leonora man has been fined $7,500 after he admitted to driving under the influence, resulting in him crashing into two parked vehicles early on Monday morning.
Andy Deokinandan, 25, of Lot 36 Leonora Pasture, West Coast Demerara, made his appearance before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him.
He pleaded guilty to the offence of driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit. In addition to the fine, his driver’s licence was endorsed.
According to a police report, at about 4.15 am on Monday Deokinandan was driving a car, bearing registration number PYY 734, and proceeding west along the southern side of New Road, allegedly at a fast rate, when he lost control of the vehicle.
As a result, his car collided with two parked vehicles owned by Mark Alleyne, of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.
The report further added that the police arrived at the scene at approximately 15 minutes after the accident and conducted a breathalyzer test on Deokinandan and confirmed that his breath alcohol level was higher than allowed.
He was arrested as a result.
In a video after the accident, seen by this newspaper, a visibly drunk Deokinandan can be seen swaying as he sat on a bench in the police station mumbling words to police ranks.
Meanwhile, Region Three Police Commander Senior Superintendent Errol Watts said too many lives are lost daily and throughout the years due to drunk drivers. He has also suggested the launch of an operation to “Name and Shame” them with the help of the media.
