A West Coast Demerara taxi driver was carjacked at gunpoint on Tuesday night and robbed of his valuables by two unidentified men who pretended to be passengers.
The driver, 39-year-old, Bhagwandin Narine, of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, who operates a white Toyota Spacio, PNN 2814, from New Road, West Coast Demerara, was sent to make a pickup opposite the West Demerara Regional Hospital where the men were waiting.
According to a police report, Narine picked up the men at about 8.30pm. Both were wearing black facemasks covering from their noses down. Prior to entering the car, one of the suspects inquired about the fare to Policeman Corner, La Parfaite Harmonie, and was told by the driver that the cost was $1,500, to which the men agreed. They both then entered the car, with one of the suspects seated in the front passenger seat and the other in the backseat behind the driver.
As Narine approached the requested location at about 9.10pm, one of the suspects asked that he stop at a mound of white sand. After coming to a stop, the suspect in the backseat grabbed the victim in a chokehold and put a black handgun to his head while demanding that he stay quiet.
The man in the front passenger seat then exited the car and pointed a black handgun at the driver’s abdomen, threatening that if he made any noise, he would be killed.
The men then searched Narine and relieved him of his valuables which included his gold wedding band valued at $75,000, and a dark blue Samsung Galaxy cell phone with SIM number 678-8408 valued at $86,000, before making off with the man’s car said to be valued at $1.3 million. The driver was not injured during the ordeal.
Police investigations are ongoing.
