A total of ten persons are currently patients at the Liliendaal Centre for Infectious Disease and Control even as minor works continue at the facility.
This disclosure was made yesterday by Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony who stated that although some minor works are ongoing, the facility is capable of taking its total capacity of patients at any time.
“Currently we have about ten patients that are in there, four of whom are in the ICU, and as you know we have capacity there for 25 persons in the ICU,” he stated during a COVID-19 update. In late November the ICU was fully operational and patients were then transferred to the facility.
During the update, Anthony stated that there is a section of the infectious disease hospital that still requires some fixing even after months of retrofitting and construction at the site. Works to that section, he noted, will be dealt with in the coming months.
“There is a section of the hospital that remains to be fixed and we will do that maybe in the next couple of months. We will look at that section but we have adequate space for those patients that we have,” he assured.
Further he reiterated that the hospital has been functioning for some time now and that there is adequate space for patients who require hospitalisation, despite the continuous minor works. “Well despite those minor works which is things that we’re continuously fixing various little things that pop up, the hospital itself has been functioning for some time now” the minister added.
After taking up his post as Minister of Health in August, Anthony had said that the facility, though commissioned by the former administration, was still in need of major works. As such, some $790 million was allocated in last year’s budget to complete works at the facility.
Works to the Intensive Care Unit at the facility were subsequently completed and patients were permanently transferred there from the Georgetown Public Hospital.
