A post-mortem examination conducted on Dulmattie Boodlall, the woman who was struck down by a Guyana Police Force minibus at Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, has established her cause of death as multiple injuries.
Boodlall, 58, of Golden Grove, was on her way to work when she was fatally struck down as she attempted to cross the highway at about 7:26 am on Tuesday.
A police report previously stated that at the time of the incident, the East Bank three-lane was active and the bus which is attached to the Tactical Services Unit was heading north along the western side of the eastern carriageway. It was being driven by a constable stationed at the unit and attached to former President David Granger.
According to the driver, he was approaching the pedestrian crossing when he suddenly saw Boodlall crossing from west to east on the pedestrian crossing. He swerved east to avoid a collision but because of the short distance the minibus collided with the pedestrian.
The report further stated that the woman was picked up by the driver in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Patricia Nandilall, a sister of the deceased, during an interview with Stabroek News stated that she last saw her sister alive when she left for work that morning. The deceased who lived a short distance away with two of her sons, would bring a small meal every day for her mom who resides with Nandilall.
Shortly after her sister left for work, Nandilall stated that family members were informed of the accident by a security guard who works at the grocery store where the now-dead woman was employed.
The grieving woman shared that according to a video seen by Boodlall’s family members, she was hit on the pedestrian crossing and thrown some distance away before the driver came to a halt.
The woman was said to have suffered head injuries, a broken arm, and other injuries about her body. It was reported that she died at the scene of the accident.
Nandilall further explained that several police officials had visited relatives of Boodlall and were told that the family intends to investigate the matter.
Relatives yesterday questioned the whereabouts of the driver involved in the accident. One relative said that the driver was absent from the hospital when they arrived and added that they have not received any form of condolences from the individual.
They further shared their frustration about being unable to receive clear information regarding the driver and the manner in which the son of the deceased was treated at the station when he inquired about what had happened to his mother.
Boodlall, who would have celebrated her 59th birthday later in January, was described as a quiet individual who was extremely nice to all.
Stabroek News had reported that the Commissioner of Police (Ag), Nigel Hoppie, had assured the relatives of the deceased that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the incident with no stone left unturned.
Hoppie along with Commander Region 4 (B), Senior Superintendent Linden Isles; Traffic Officer, Superintendent Ramesh Ashram; Officer in-Charge of Traffic Region 4 B, Assistant Superintendent, Jermaine Harper; and several other ranks had visited Boodlall’s home and met with her relatives.
A post on the GPF Facebook page said that pastors from the Cops and Faith religious team were also present at the visit. They prayed with the family and assured them that the Guyana Police Force will support their family throughout this trying time.
