After being in and out of consciousness for approximately two weeks, city businessman Deodat Ramsamooj, who was struck down by a speeding car on December 26, 2020, is showing signs of recovery, his nephew Nathan Persaud said.
Speaking to Stabroek News yesterday, Persaud said that that his uncle was responding well to medical treatment and was expected to be moved to the ward from the ICU, where he was hospitalized subsequent to the accident.
The nephew also related that they are still having difficulties sourcing surveillance footage to aid in identifying the car and driver involved in the accident. He said that they have approached the New Thriving Restaurant but were informed that their cameras were not working and Palm Court has informed them that only a side camera is working.
He added that the police surveillance footage captured the accident but they are unable to identify the vehicle’s licence plate.
Persaud said the family is pleading with anyone who has knowledge of the accident or witnessed it to come forward.
Ramsamooj, proprietor of USA Style and Fashion located on America Street, Georgetown, and of Eccles, East Bank Demerara was struck down moments after leaving Palm Court on Main Street, Georgetown.
He is still receiving medical treatment at a private city hospital.
From the CCTV footage provided by Palm Court and seen by this newspaper, the speeding motor car struck Ramsamooj from behind. As a result of the impact, the businessman ended up on top of the bonnet of the car and then landed on the roadway. He sustained severe injuries as a result of the collision.
According to the family, the car slowed down after the impact but then sped away without stopping to offer any assistance.
Ramsamooj was picked up in a semi-conscious state and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention. He was treated there for a few days and then moved by his family to a private facility.
Persaud is asking that anyone who witnessed the accident, inform the police or contact the family at telephone numbers 614-4077 or 662-2826.
