Clive Fields, the man who was seen in a video circulated on social media being kicked in the head by a lawman after efforts to subdue him at Stabroek Market, has been charged with robbery with aggravation and granted bail.
Fields, also known as ‘Anthony Prince,’ appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Wednesday, when Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charge to him.
The charge alleges that on January 3, 2021, Fields, in the vicinity of Demico House, at Stabroek Square, robbed Ricky Menque, a Venezuelan national, of a Samsung cell phone and $25,000 cash. Fields was released on $30,000 bail.
Menque had exited a minibus and was walking on the pavement in the vicinity of Demico House when three males, who were walking in the opposite direction, ambushed him.
The police said that following investigations it was revealed that the men robbed Menque and made good their escape. Further reports say that Fields was arrested and was positively identified by Menque as one of the individuals who robbed him.
Video footage that was circulated on social media showed Fields and a police officer in a brawl before another officer joined in. Fields was then cuffed and kicked into submission.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) subsequently issued a statement where it claimed that Fields attacked the policemen and that the officers were “forced to defend themselves.” The force further stated that the police defending himself led to a physical confrontation between the suspect and the police.
The Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is investigating the matter and has asked that anyone who might have witnessed the incident, between the suspect and the members of the Force, to make contact with the Officer in charge of the Police OPR on Telephone number 227-1926 or the Commander of the Regional Police Division on 226-1389
