The residents of Overwinning, East Bank Berbice yesterday received 28 streetlights from the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall.
Regional Chairman, David Armogan, Regional Vice Chairman, Zamal Hussain and Regional Executive Officer, Narindra Persaud handed over the streetlights to the residents.
After the handing over, Ramrattie Dhannie, 82, who has been residing in the village for 58 years, told Stabroek News, that “We very glad that we get this streetlights because any sickness or anything night time, thief man and so, how you go come out? God bless the government for doing this”.
According to the woman, this is the first time the village will be having streetlights, “Them a do one, one thing. Them can’t do everything one time”.
Also, the woman noted, that the village is yet to have the services of a GTT landline, something they would greatly appreciate.
Another resident, Sohan Sukhra, 63, who has resided in the village all his life, said, “We feel so nice fuh know we get lights”. Sukra, who has been the victim of three robberies at his home over the last five years, said,
“I approach the chairman office and they respond right away and today we see they fulfill their commitment”.
The man noted that they also asked that clearing and drainage works be carried out in the village and this has already started he said. Another resident Indra Rajkumar, stated, “I want to join with the people of Overwinning to tell you all that we are very grateful and thankful for the help”.
