After bursting onto the scene in 2015, Guyana’s fittest man, Dillon Mahadeo has made several splashes in the fitness arena, this year he plans to make waves.
In fact, the five-time Kares Engineering Fitness Challenge champ has tsunami-like plans for 2021 and beyond.
“I have plans to compete at various CrossFit sanctioned events and Weightlifting competitions abroad for the remainder of the year based on contingencies around the coronavirus restrictions,” Mahadeo told this newspaper yesterday.
The 25 year-old who made his debut at the prestigious Reebok CrossFit Games in 2019 added that “The ultimate goal is to qualify for the CrossFit Games again in August and represent Guyana at the pinnacle of the sport.
To punch his ticket at the annual event, Mahadeo needs to earn his qualification.
“The first competition on the horizon will be in March, the CrossFit Games Open which is an online qualifier. My main focus right now is preparing for this competition.”
The competition will be the first stage of qualifiers to the 2021 CrossFit Games in Madison.
Mahadeo currently has his hard hat on laying the groundwork.
“Preparations have already begun in December, all through the holiday season where I’ve been putting in steady work.”
Mahadeo further disclosed that while he was disappointed in 2020 due to the lack of competitions, he used the year as an ‘off-season’ to strengthen his weaknesses and labelled it as a ‘blessing in disguise’.
“The 2020 season started with the prospects of competing at the 2020 CrossFit Games. However that got cancelled due to the pandemic and the only competition I was able to compete in 2020 was in February, prior to the restrictions, where I defended my title for the fifth consecutive year.”
He added “During the pandemic, I was fortunate to have access to a private gym facility where I executed my training regimen daily. Due to the cancellation of all the major competitions, I treated the entire 2020 season as my ‘off-season’ which allowed me to focus heavily on my weaknesses.
In hindsight, looking at it from an optimistic viewpoint, the pandemic actually came as a blessing in disguise for me. I was able to spend more time in the gym also working on intricate parts of my game such as reading more books on my craft and listening to podcasts to gain more knowledge on the sport.”
This is not a new Mahadeo, this is the same Mahadeo with new upgrades, so hang onto your hats, Mahadeo 2.0 will be making big waves in 2021. (Emmerson Campbell)
