An East Canje Berbice woman was yesterday charged with attempted murder after allegedly beating a six-year-old child with a piece of wood then abandoning her in a swampy area after she lost consciousness in early December last year.
Drupattie Balkarran, 25, of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
It was alleged that on December 13th, 2020, at Goed Bananen Land, East Canje Berbice, Balkarran wounded the child intent to commit murder.
The unrepresented woman was not required to enter a plea and was placed on $300,000 bail. She is to return to the Reliance Magistrate’s Court on January 27th.
She was also ordered to have no contact with the child.
Balkarran was arrested after the child was discovered in a swampy area. The child was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was admitted for some time.
The girl suffered a fractured skull and other injuries.
However, she has since been discharged from the hospital and is at her father’s house recovering.
