This year’s Aliann Pompey Invitational (API) will be the most challenging one yet, but every safety measure will be complied with to ensure the safety of all those involved.
So said founder of the meet Aliann Pompey who also disclosed that June 19 is the date earmarked for this year’s event.
“There’s still a lot of work to be done. For obvious reasons, it will be the most challenging one yet,” said Pompey yesterday.
The four-time Olympian added “We need to ensure the safety of everyone participating at every level. Protocols and precautions are changing quickly over time, so we have to monitor those.
The most important thing is that we have to be able to implement this event safely and we can’t take that lightly.”
Last year, the annual API along with the Olympic Games were shelved due to the ongoing pandemic but this year, the event is one of last Qualifiers for Toyko, 2021.
The four-time Olympian opined that June 19 is a sweet spot for those looking to punch a ticket to the prestigious Games.
“With the Olympics set for this year, athletes are still looking to fill out their calendar and find opportunities to qualify. I think the date of the event is great for that – it’s not too early in the season and it gives them time to get in peak shape, and it’s 100% in the qualifying time period.
The Commonwealth Games 400m gold and silver medallist then lamented the need for corporate backing to pull off a successful API.
“This year more than ever, we need the continued support of our governmental and corporate backers.
Every facet has suffered some kind of loss because of the pandemic, and we ask our sponsors to continue to support us as we aim to host a successful international on Guayana’s shores.”
Quizzed on if she has been in communication with Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr, the USA based Pompey stated,
“Yes I have, he’s very supportive of it and will be working with us.”
