As West Indies Women begin their first training camp, head coach, Courtney Walsh has set his target on the Women’s 50-over World Cup Qualifiers later this year.
Walsh disclosed that this camp is the beginning of their preparation for the tournament that is booked for Sri Lanka in June during a zoom conference yesterday.
According to the former fast bowler, “The qualifiers are right now the main item on the agenda, we have to go to the qualifiers ready and what we need to do is whatever we can under the conditions to ensure everyone is ready mentally and physically.”
The 58-year-old Jamaican explained that while it may seem as if June is a long way from now, in reality the team does not have a lot of time to prepare. He informed that he had wanted the camp to begin in November but due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was not realistic.
Walsh noted, “This camp is to set the foundation, have a look and more or less have everybody’s mind geared towards what we have to do and outline the plan and strategies we are thinking of going forward.”
Following the camp, Walsh indicated that he was hopeful to have the women’s regional tournament and a tour before the qualifiers.
“I would like from this camp to put things in place and hopefully we get the regionals played and try to get a tour before the qualifiers so we have some cricket… we are hoping to go and play a tour, possibility it could be Bangladesh, possibility it could be India, nothing is confirmed as yet but there is talks, Bangladesh has indicated they are interested…we are hopeful we can get a tour preferably to the subcontinent where the qualifiers will be in Sri Lanka it will be ideal for us,” Walsh stated.
