The badly decomposed body of an East Coast Demerara man who went missing in the Canje Creek on Friday has  been recovered.

Dead is Joachim Perez Peters, 33, of Friendship.

Stabroek News was told that the body was brought out from the area to the New Amsterdam Stelling and then escorted to the Bailey’s Funeral Parlour where a post-mortem examination will be done.

A source noted that due to the state of decomposition of the body it could not be determined whether there were any marks of violence.

According to information gathered, Peters  and five others who are all employed at AVR Sawmill located at Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje Berbice,  last Thursday boarded a punt which had a small boat with an outboard engine tied alongside. It was captained by  Bruno George, 65, of Fort Ordnance, East Canje Berbice and was heading into the Canje Creek.

On Friday last, at around 6 pm, while in the vicinity of Sand Landing (Kari-Kari), Canje Creek, the captain was about to take a turn when he noticed Peters about 20 feet away from the boat.

The captain, who was held for questioning had told investigators that two of the men jumped overboard to offer some assistance but were unable to do so due to the rough waters. On Saturday afternoon, after the men returned from the area, a report was made at the New Amsterdam Police Station after which an investigation was launched and a team was sent to the area to assist with the search.

The police are continuing the investigation.
