An alternative road link aimed at significantly reducing traffic congestion on the East Bank of Demerara is currently under construction and is on schedule to be completed by April.
The road is currently being built from Diamond to Eccles and from pictures posted on President Irfaan Ali’s Facebook page, an entire stretch of road has already been paved with asphalt. In the pictures posted it also showed that two double lane bridges are under construction.
The project falls under the Ministry of Housing and Water.
Minister within the ministry, Susan Rodrigues last night told Stabroek News that the road was necessary as her ministry has opened up and allocated house lots to persons in proximity to the road.
“At the back of Great Diamond, Little Diamond, Prospect, all those areas were opened up for land and allocated so the road is very crucial not only for the housing schemes but to address the traffic congestion on the East Bank,” she explained.
The East Bank Highway despite being a four-lane thoroughfare is often congested with traffic. During peak hours traffic is known to move at almost a snail’s pace causing many to spend well over an hour completing their commute.
According to Rodrigues the opening of the road will significantly reduce the amount of traffic on the East Bank as persons from Diamond and other areas will have the option of using the alternative route.
The minister noted too that the contractors are working on a very tight schedule and frequent checks are made on the progress of the road.
