A police constable on duty was yesterday morning hit by a truck in the vicinity of Rahaman’s Park, Houston Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Constable Roy Shanks, who is stationed at the Ruimveldt Police Station, was at the time performing traffic duties when the incident occurred.
A Police report states that Shanks reportedly indicated to the driver of the lorry to stop, but even after the brakes were applied, the vehicle continued to move forward and subsequently came into contact with the officer.
As a result of the incident Shanks suffered minor injuries about his body.
He was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was treated for his injuries.
The driver of the lorry is presently in police custody assisting with the investigation. Meanwhile, a source informed Stabroek News that according to another officer who was present at the scene of the accident, the driver of the truck failed to adhere to Shanks’ directive to stop in a timely manner.
On the other hand, the driver and porter of the lorry claimed that the officer suddenly stepped into the path of the truck and was hit.
The two occupants said that the company which the lorry was contracted to, is presently engaged in a road project in a community on the East Bank of Demerara.
They said that due to the fact that the cargo in the truck’s tray was asphalt, clearance was given to travel during the morning peak hours.
They opined that it is possible that Officer Shanks was not aware of the project, hence his attempt to stop the vehicle.
The accident occurred at about 7:45 am.
